Red Bull has offered Max Verstappen a new contract through the end of 2029 that would increase his salary and remove the exit clause that has put his future in play this summer.
According to Bild, the proposal is Red Bull’s answer to a clause in Verstappen’s current deal, which runs until the end of 2028 but allows him to leave if he is not first or second in the drivers’ championship by the summer break. With Verstappen outside the top two, the clause is now in play and the report says he has until October to decide whether to use it.
Rather than trying to pay him to waive that right, Red Bull is pushing for a full rewrite of the agreement. Bild says the new offer would add one more season, taking the deal to the end of 2029, lift Verstappen’s annual pay from roughly €65 million to as much as €80 million, and remove any exit clause altogether.
The offer has reportedly been with Verstappen’s camp for several weeks, but no official response has been given. A Red Bull source cited by Bild said, “Both parties remain in constant contact. Red Bull, Verstappen and his entourage all want to continue their collaboration.”
That broad position was echoed by Verstappen’s manager Raymond Vermeulen, speaking to Bild. “We have a contract until 2028. Of course, there are exit clauses, there always have been. But we have never exercised one. On the contrary. We have always been loyal and will remain so. We want to continue our path with Red Bull and Max wants to finish his career here, but obviously with the possibility to win.”
Verstappen himself publicly played down the speculation at the Hungaroring. “I am feeling good, and from my side, what I’m saying that there is nothing to say is because there’s nothing going on,” he said. He added that his focus is “just trying to get the most out of the car,” before calling Red Bull “like a second family to me.”
That leaves Red Bull trying to turn a vulnerable contract position into a stronger long-term commitment, while Verstappen holds the leverage of an active exit window and no immediate deadline before October.
