Max Verstappen’s Monaco Grand Prix ended at the end of the opening lap after a power-unit problem he said began on the formation lap left his Red Bull barely able to move away from second on the grid.
A front-row start turned into an immediate retirement when the RB22 failed to launch cleanly as the lights went out. Verstappen was swallowed by the field and dropped to the back, but managed to get enough drive back into the car to limp away and return to the pit lane, where Red Bull retired him.
Speaking afterward, Verstappen said he knew something was wrong before the race had properly started. The Red Bull driver told Sky Sports F1 that he first noticed it “when the formation lap was not going very well.” He then described a worsening sequence on the grid: “And then, after that, the pre-start was terrible, like there was just no consistency, and then the engine just dropped dead.”
That account matched his radio traffic during the incident. Verstappen reported that “already on the formation lap, the engine is broken. Engine’s broken,” then vented his frustration as the car struggled to accelerate. After asking, “What should I do?” he was instructed by race engineer Gianpiero Lambiase to bring the car back and box.
The problem did not clear once the car finally moved. Verstappen said he recovered only limited performance after Sainte Devote and immediately knew the race was gone. “I only got a little bit of power back after the first corner, and then the engine sounded really awful; I could not go full throttle,” he said. “So we brought it back, and that was it.”
The failure was especially costly because Verstappen had lined up second and was in position to shape the race from the front in Monaco, where track position is usually decisive. Instead, his afternoon was effectively over within seconds of lights out.
Red Bull had no solution during the race and had still not confirmed the exact cause afterward. Across the available accounts, the issue was described as a start-sequence or power-unit failure rather than a single identified fault, leaving the team to investigate what turned a strong grid slot into an almost immediate retirement.
