Jos Verstappen fire that changed F1 pit safety

An FIA investigation found Benetton had removed a safety filter from its refuelling system to speed pit stops by about 12.5%, a change linked to the 1994 German Grand Prix fire that engulfed Jos Verstappen’s car during a stop at Hockenheim.

The incident came on Verstappen’s first pit stop after 15 of the race’s 45 laps. As the Intertechnique refuelling nozzle was connected, pressurised fuel sprayed out of the system and onto the Benetton’s hot bodywork and rear brakes. Mechanics initially recoiled as they saw the fuel spraying, then moved back toward the car when it appeared nothing had happened, only for the fuel to ignite and turn the B194 into a fireball.

The blaze lasted only a few seconds before crew members and marshals brought it under control, but the danger was immediate and violent. Verstappen had his visor slightly open, which was common at the time, and suffered minor burns around his nose and eyes. Several mechanics were also burned in the incident, although none suffered serious injuries.

In a later recollection, Jos Verstappen said, “You're in the car, suddenly the whole car goes up in flames and you can't really do anything. You panic.” He also acknowledged how quickly the response came once the fire had taken hold. “I must say the team had it under control very quickly; after a few seconds the fire was out.”

The FIA’s investigation focused on the refuelling hardware behind the accident. It concluded that with the safety filter removed, a foreign object was able to jam the valve so that it did not close properly, allowing fuel to spray uncontrollably. The missing filter increased fuel flow by roughly 12.5% and was worth about a second in the pits, according to the findings.

Benetton were fined over the system, although the team maintained that removing the filter was not the direct cause of the fire. That dispute did not change the wider lesson for the sport. The Hockenheim incident exposed how small performance gains in the pit lane could carry major safety consequences when teams pushed beyond approved configurations.

Formula 1’s response was significant. The FIA moved to require fail-safe cut-out mechanisms on fuel hoses so that fuel flow would stop instantly if something went wrong. Fire-resistant clothing became mandatory for all pit-stop personnel, helmet and protective equipment requirements were tightened, and teams were required to use refuelling rigs only in their approved standard form under stricter FIA oversight.

The fire also fed into the broader case against in-race refuelling itself. Long before refuelling disappeared from modern grand prix racing, Verstappen’s Hockenheim accident had already shown how quickly a routine stop could become a major safety failure, and it formed part of the justification for Formula 1’s ban on refuelling from the 2010 season onward.
