Hulkenberg hit by freak shutdown in Barcelona

Nico Hulkenberg’s 2026 Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix ended in one of Formula 1’s strangest retirements when gravel thrown up by Liam Lawson at Turn 12 struck Audi’s external safety systems and shut the car down completely.

Hulkenberg said Lawson "put a wheel in the gravel exit of [Turn] 12, kicked up a lot of gravel, and that gravel somehow one stone pulled the emergency trigger on the left of the roll hoop, and it just killed the car." With no power left, he said, "The car was dead," and he could only coast back into the pitlane before retiring.

Audi later confirmed the impact hit the fire extinguisher and the ERS kill switch. Racing director Allan McNish said the strike activated "an automatic safety function designed to shut the car down in an emergency situation," ending "what had been a very good weekend for us as a team." McNish added that Hulkenberg had been able to "coast back to the pits," but that was the end of his race.

For Hulkenberg, the shutdown was unlike anything he had experienced before. He called it "the most strange and absurd retirement of my career" and said he had "never seen or heard about this [happening], to be honest, in my career." He also described it as "very unlucky" after 16 years in Formula 1.

Lawson did not realize his trip through the gravel had caused the Audi to drop out until afterward. When told what had happened, the Racing Bulls driver responded: "Are you serious?! No way." He then added, "Oh, that's so unfortunate," before saying, "Obviously I had no idea. If I could perfectly aim for something like that, it would be quite impressive!"

The retirement came after 29 completed laps and carried a significant cost for Audi. Hulkenberg believed the way the race unfolded later on could have opened the door to points, and one report said Audi should have been firmly in the points as attrition hit cars ahead while Lawson went on to finish ninth.
