Alex Albon will become Williams' all-time Formula 1 starts leader at the Barcelona Grand Prix, where his 96th race for the team will take him past Nigel Mansell's long-standing mark of 95.
The milestone comes just one week after Albon drew level with Mansell in Monaco, and Williams will mark it with a tribute that connects the two drivers directly. Albon is set to wear a blue, white and red helmet based on the design Mansell used in his 1992 title-winning season.
For Albon, the record reflects more than simple longevity. Having joined Williams in 2022 after losing his Red Bull seat and spending a year off the grid, he has become a central figure in the team's climb from the back of the field into the midfield. He said: "It is incredible to think that I've raced for this historic team more often than one of the true greats of the sport."
Albon framed the achievement as a marker of Williams' broader progress rather than a personal statistic alone. "Nigel Mansell was an inspiration to me growing up, a true fighter and a legend for both Williams and Formula 1 as a whole," he said. "This achievement is about far more than the number itself. Every Grand Prix start over the last five seasons represents the hard work of the entire team at Grove. Through the highs and lows, every race has contributed to the journey Williams has been on."
He added that putting his name alongside "legendary Williams drivers such as Nigel, Damon Hill, and Ralf Schumacher" was "a real privilege and a source of immense pride."
Williams team principal James Vowles said the record was the product of a sustained relationship between driver and team. "Records like this don't happen by accident - they're the result of years of hard work, trust, and belief on both sides," Vowles said. "I am immensely proud of Alex and everything he has achieved with this team. He has earned his place in Williams history, and we're proud to celebrate these milestones together."
Mansell, still Williams' most successful driver with 28 wins, welcomed Albon's move to the top of the starts list and tied it to the direction the team is now taking. "I'm so pleased to see Alex reach this milestone - it's a really special achievement and one he thoroughly deserves," Mansell said.
He added: "The commitment he has shown to Williams over these past five seasons says everything about him as a driver and as a person. It's not just Alex - the whole team is moving in the right direction, and that's brilliant to see."
