Andrea Kimi Antonelli emerged from the Canadian Grand Prix as the standout name in RacingNews365’s post-race analysis, with his breakthrough drive in Montreal sharpening the title conversation just as Mercedes team-mate George Russell saw his race unravel.
That contrast gave the weekend its clearest championship meaning. Before the race, Mercedes had looked set to control the story after Russell took pole and lined up with a chance to cut into Antonelli’s 18-point lead in the standings. The team had also been expected to benefit from a major upgrades package in conditions forecast to be wet.
Instead, the focus swung heavily toward Antonelli. RacingNews365’s Ian Parkes, Sam Coop and Nick Golding went as far as debating whether he should now be considered the title favourite, while Stuart Codling and Ronald Vording described his Montreal performance as a breakthrough drive.
Russell’s afternoon pushed the contrast even further. One recap described his race as an unravelling caused by mechanical problems, while another said he was forced to stop fighting Antonelli and then reacted “completely incorrectly” in the eyes of race officials.
Mercedes’ split result was only part of the damage Canada did to the expected order. McLaren was also left under scrutiny after RacingNews365’s panel questioned whether the team made a major mistake by starting on intermediates, a strategy call another recap said compromised its result.
Around that, two of Formula 1’s biggest names still reshaped the podium picture. Lewis Hamilton finished second for Ferrari in what was described as his strongest result yet for the Scuderia, while Max Verstappen added another unexpected top-three finish.
Taken together, Montreal turned what had been billed as a Mercedes opportunity into a much broader reset in the championship debate, with Antonelli’s rise, Russell’s setback and McLaren’s error all changing the balance around the front of the field.
