Alex Albon Adds David Coulthard to Team

Alex Albon is set to strengthen his management structure by bringing in 13-time grand prix winner David Coulthard as an adviser and mentor, according to RacingNews365, in a move that comes as the Williams driver tries to navigate a difficult season.

Coulthard is expected to join the team around Albon rather than replace it. Jacques Heckstall-Smith will remain Albon’s primary manager, while the former McLaren and Red Bull driver adds another layer of support with both career guidance and direct input from his experience in Formula 1. Coulthard made 246 starts during his F1 career and won 13 races.

The first visible signs of that arrangement appeared at the Belgian Grand Prix. RacingNews365 reported that Coulthard was seen in the Williams garage and in close conversation with Albon during first practice at Spa-Francorchamps, suggesting his involvement is already taking shape trackside.

The link between the two is not new. Albon and Coulthard have known each other since Albon’s time in the Red Bull system, when Coulthard remained active around the team as a Red Bull ambassador. The summaries also state that the pair have previously been business partners, giving the relationship a foundation beyond occasional paddock contact.

That matters because Albon is trying to respond to a much tougher campaign than the one Williams enjoyed last year. After helping the team secure fifth in the 2025 constructors’ championship alongside Carlos Sainz, its best result in eight years, Albon has been dealing with a car that has left Williams well down the order through the opening phase of 2026.

The problems have been significant. The summaries report that Williams’ car was not ready in time at the start of the season and then suffered from major overbalance issues early in the campaign. The result has been a sharp drop in competitiveness for both team and driver after the progress shown in 2025.

For Albon personally, that has translated into just five points so far and 16th place in the championship. In that context, adding Coulthard is not just a cosmetic management change. It gives Albon access to a former top-level driver at a moment when he is trying to manage both a difficult season on track and the broader direction of his career at Williams.

Albon has been a central figure for Williams since joining the team, and last season’s rise made him an important part of its progress. With the team now struggling to repeat that level, the arrival of Coulthard in his support structure places extra focus on how Albon handles the downturn and where he can take his next step from here.
