Buenos Aires pushes F1 return with Miami pitch and track rebuild

A Buenos Aires delegation will meet Liberty Media at the Miami Grand Prix to present real construction progress on the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez and make the case that Argentina is ready to rejoin the F1 calendar if an opportunity opens in 2027.

The redevelopment is split into two phases. Phase 1 readies a 4.3 km layout aimed at hosting MotoGP. Phase 2 would extend the track to nearly 5 km to meet Formula 1 requirements. Officials are weighing whether to bring the F1 extension forward to show long-term commitment. The plan keeps the classic venue inside the city while updating it to modern standards for top-level events.

Work on site is under way. Crews have started major demolition and rebuilds across key areas, including the pit complex, grandstands, paddock, and large sections of the racing surface. Project leaders say the job is about 10 percent complete. The resurfacing uses high-performance GIMA asphalt, selected to handle the loads of modern cars and bikes. The target is to finish the MotoGP configuration by the end of the year. The venue is now pursuing FIA Grade 2 status. Organizers say they can add the final elements needed for FIA Grade 1, which is required for F1, after minor modifications once the extension is done.

City officials and local promoter Grupo OSD will travel to Miami to brief Liberty Media on the build since last season and to show that construction is active. The group will also outline how the team is working with Tilke, the circuit design firm, following Liberty’s advice. The aim is to demonstrate a clear path from the current works to an F1-ready facility, with plans, timelines, and technical standards all aligned.

Organizers are preparing for a possible 2027 opening if a calendar slot becomes free. They point to expiring race contracts and a broader rotation of events as reasons to be ready. They also acknowledge that 2028 is more likely if no earlier window appears. The delegation will position Buenos Aires as a turnkey option should the schedule shift, with the circuit capable of stepping up from Grade 2 to Grade 1 once the extension is built.

The push includes a public moment at home. A planned Formula 1 demonstration run in Buenos Aires by Franco Colapinto is being used to showcase fan interest and support for the project. The event is set to boost visibility for the bid and connect the build to a rising Argentine driver. Officials see the demo, the Miami meetings, and the ongoing works at the Autódromo Oscar y Juan Gálvez as parts of the same message to F1: Argentina is rebuilding for a return, and it is doing so on a clear timeline.
